Happy New Year, Happy Birthday (to me) and happy Crocheting!!!

I'm almost done with the Autumn Afternoon Afghan!!! Just some spaghetti strings to weave in, then a wash.

Crochet Adventure!

I know it's been a while. i apologize for my time away, but the spirit of crocheting has awoken and all it took was thoughtful suggestion.... ^_^

one day i was in the car and said, "you know, my sunglasses get really dusty when i throw them in my bag."

"why don't you crochet a case," my boyfriend asked.

what a novel idea... hee hee

here is my new bag case:

It's done in single crochet, one rectangle, then sewed up the sides. then i made a chain and ran it through every third stitch for a draw string. It works great and keeps my glasses dust and dirt free.

now that the crochet bug is alive and kicking again, i decided to join a crochet club from meetup.com. we met in central park (though i passed them because i didn't have my glasses on :P) and had a nice straight hooking session.

one project that i started about two years ago was the Autumn Afternoon Afghan (free pattern on Lion Brand's site, but you have to register to see it). the pattern seemed easy - single crochet squares 75% one color, 25% another for a zig-zag look. i was able to finish three more squares in just this afternoon ^_____^

i'd talk more about it, but my eyes are closing as i'm sitting here writing. hahahaha it's been a good long day. not to mention - it was a perfectly beautiful day to crochet!

the stitch is a simple half-double crochet. i love the way the ridges come out. ^_^

Not sure if i want to make a hat to match... but it was nice to crochet again.

apologies for not keeping you up to date with my projects. not sure if i have time to make meters... but we'll see.

to quickly update you:

I'm working on another unisex hat (posted about that earlier in Jan 2005 i think...). this time, in my sweater blue yarn. as for the sweater, that will just be an off the shoulder shirt for under a bodice. YEAH REN FAIRE

also working on a scarf that will compliment the lovely sweater knitted by my sister.

Desparate Times call for... YARN!

Yeah... so in my desparate attempt to crochet while moving between dwellings... i brought this from storage.

Beef twine my foot. i'd rather make it into bags, or sweaters, or even a cute little stuffed animal. not sure what i want to do with it this time. normally after the first row, i get an idea of what i'd like to crochet.

right now, i'm not sure if i want to part the strands (it's very thick), or leave it and just make whatever. perhaps a table mat, or a set... or a pot holder or pot rest... yeah.. something domestic for my possible new dwelling.

we'll see. try to crochet many different materials. i think you'd be surprised with what you can do.

Very bad crocheter!!!

I've been very bad in not updating!

School, a separation, and job craziness has kept me away from my beloved hooking. Ah well...

Out of sheer desperation, i went into storage, where all my things are kept now-a-days, and pulled out a ball of cotton string and a crochet hook. This weekend, i will start something again!

Planning on finishing that sweater too... it's getting colder here in NY and i'll need it.

Now i think i'd like to complete the neck line as a collar, but i don't know if i have enough yarn. Also want to rib the cuffs to make it pretty.

Will post more often now, i've been away for too long. :D

Decided to go with 3/4 sleeves, and once i put it on... it was made into an off the shoulder piece... hahahahaha

here it is without being on me.

Looking to make a middle piece that will complete it as a sweater. we'll see how it goes.

a little spring cleaning

gotta keep up at least one post a month! it's getting harder ^______^

sweater's almost done. one sleeve is finished and i'm on to the next. will post once complete.

i also picked up some funky colored yarn and am making an interesting shawl with double crochet... though it might be half-double..who can tell anymore. It's netted and will look cool once complete.

pictures to come i promise. might have to get rid of some of the older stuff. i was tempted to blow away last year's stuff for space... we'll see.

hee hee hee

completed a quick project... i came across some pretty cotton yarn at the hardware store and figured i'd pick some up. It's 100% cotton and is marked "meat string" i think. probably something that butchers use to tie up packs of meat.

well it's sturdy and thick, and i imagined a little hand bag that would look great in this color:

not sure if i want to line it. being that it's so sturdy, i don't think it will gather and stretch like the acrylic bag i had. of course there are problems with it... but i'm still learning right? at least its functional. ^_^

And now... some sweater progress:

matching the tank straps, i started new rows and decreased just at the underarm. you can see it a little on the first picture. i've included a close up so you can see the different stiches. it's almost seamless, yet it has some character.

hopefully, i'll have this done before the snow melts. hee hee.

Tank/Sweater updates

Hello!

sorry i've been gone so long. just been through an apartment move, job relocation, and start of school! whew!

Here are some promised updates.

I've since started working on the shoulder/arm piece, but here is an overall picture of the tank... after i frogged it to start all over again. hee hee

And below is a close up of the stitches. See how i went vertical? that made it a bit easier for me to add on the tank straps. Yeah free form. hee hee

Despite the frogging, the yarn is holding up pretty well. I loved the grey specks, so i was willing to pay $4.95/skein... :-O

Ah well. At least it will make a pretty sweater! and did i mention how soft it is....? ^_^

Starting again

well.. seems like i've screwed up again :(. This time, i was crocheting at my inlaw's house, and i managed to join opposite tank top straps together... in a criss cross fashion. The tank top idea is going out the window, i'll frog that silly thing and stick to my rectangles until i'm better aquainted with free form clothing!! ^_^

So now, i'm working on two "T" shaped pieces, that i'll join at the top (not including the middle part for the head hole), and then at the sides. Will try to get pics up, but i can't even bring myself to show you the picture of the mess up i did today. hahaha

well, it looks as if the sleeves were too tight around my shoulder area for the sweater.

i'm going to frog just up to the arm straps and then start again. ah well. that's what i get for free forming right?

YAY!!! Yesterday i stopped by the yarn store by my job and they finally had Reynold's Utopia AND they had the blue with flecked grey. Now i can finish my blue tank/sweater/shirt.

It was too plain as a tank, so i decided to make it into a sweater/shirt. I don't know if i want to go with bell sleeves (something i've wanted to try), or not. I picked up two skeins ($4.50 a pop!) and will work with that.

Two more squares are done on my Autumn Afghan project, which brings me to 15 squares... i think. Will check tonight. ^_^

looks like everything's moving along. I'm on vacation for two weeks, so i get a little crochet time. ^_^

Finished 5 more squares today for a total of 13 squares. Will keep you updated on that.

i did manage to complete another project, though. The hooks on my ceiling were in dire need of plant hangers, so with a little googling, i found this pattern:

Well, i didn't exactly have the yarn to use a size K hook... so i improvised..

not quite what i expected, but it came out okay, and it works.

Now i have to make a matching one. Perhaps i'll double up the strands to make it a little stronger.

remember i was making the Afternoon Afghan? Yeah, well it's become MEGA boring.

my stitches are still not straight enough to produce the same shape/size squares! i think i was better off with the granny square project. hee hee

Anyway, here is one of my squares:

i wish i could do better, but putting down my hook to measure the correct size really takes me out of the rhythm of crocheting and i lose my tension!

ah well. i'll continue until i'm done!

iPod Cozy

YAY!!!

So we were in the apple store a few months ago and saw this rediculous item:

Apple iPod Socks

My hubby loved them, thought they were cute.

"I could make you one, you know. Even get some white yarn" i told him.
"YAY!" he replied.

So, i made him one:

it's really nothing more than a pocket, but he loves it and wants more. it's still pretty clean (everything of his is clean ^_________^) but he wants more socks because they protect his precious iPod hee hee

I plan to make more, maybe in other colors, but it was so easy.

Make a rectangle as large as the measurement around the ipod, then sew it up on two sides, leaving the top open. insert iPod and enjoy!

New updates... YAY!

Wow! Finally have some time to post!

Since april, i've been quite busy. School, work, and making sure i have time for myself!

I had to find a decent picture, to get all the measurements in order

This was a perfect shot.. but i didn't have enough time to get it done properly. So this is what i was able to create:

Here was my first attempt

It was all done in single crochet stitches, made to match a tank top that fit me already. I had to keep refering back to the picture to make sure that the placement of the bottom slant was correct (where the middle seam parts) and this was the second in the making.

My first vest was done in one night, but as i put it on i realized that it was too low. As you can see in the original piccie of Mai, the vest front meets just above her breast area, not to show any cleavage, at all. My first vest joined just beneath the middle of my breast area, way too small. So, i started again!

It was all free form, no pattern and as i said before, i had to refer to the picture as i created each piece. This was my method:

1 - did the back as all one peice. i started at the top and then increased until the back armholes were shaped.
2 - made each front side. they are pretty much identical, with the exception of the "right" side of the stitch. For that, i think i just tried my best to make them look okay... hahahahaha
3 - the white trimming. This was kind of hard. The trimming was all on the edge of the crochet and after trying several times, unsuccessfully, i just decided to end the edge in the orange yarn, then go over it in white.
4 - did the bottom section. it was much easier to form the slants at the bottom of her vest when the bottom section was separate from the rest of the piece. So i made a trapeziod shape, and added a few extra stitches here and there (the reason for the ruffles). I added too many increases and it turned out curly instead of form fitting.

I'll probably do this once more so i can fit it better to my body and have it tight like Mai does.

And i'll post other entries for my other projects!

Pattern Change Explanation

Okay... so i have some time to explain why i think the pattern should be switched.

In the line:

Brim:

Ch 46. Join, without twisting, to form a circle. Sc around for 7rnds. Turn inside-out, and crochet to the left again (which is the way you just came) sc in the FRONT LOOPS ONLY. Sc for 6 rnds. Join with a sl st. Ch 2.

From this point, continue onto the rounded part of the hat. If you continue from the ridges you just made, the unfolded hat would look like this:

Now, if you were to fold over the bottom flap, it would completely hide the ridge you just made. Instead, I suggest starting with the ridges first, to make it look like this:

Right Side Out:

Inside Out:

This way, once you turn it right side out, fold over the flap, the finished hat looks like this:

Okay... so i lied about the knitting posts!!! I'll probably post a lot more knitting if my sister made something cool, but from now on, it will probably just include stuff she made for me!

This is what she worked so hard on, her very FIRST knitting project!!! I'm so proud! :D

Basically, that muffin is a character i created a while ago. When i was at college, my current husband and i used to draw on that white board. We drew muffins and cookies and it was the cutest thing! Something in my house always has the picture. Very cute. I even made a Café Press Store Muffin Pics with my drawing.

It's just toooooooo cute!!!

I figured i should show you guys what i've been working on.

The Poncho, lapghan, shawl, whatever you want to call it... i've frogged the whole thing (almost twice) because i didn't know exactly what i want to do with it. So far, i've decided that i want to use the half-double crochet because it makes cool ridges. maybe i'll just make a funky shawl or something. we'll see. probably end up being another hat and scarf set :P

As for my Afternoon Afghan... i've had to frog about 2-3 squares because the second one i made was perfect enough for me to keep. the others aren't doing so well. i think i'm going to add it to my square list on the side. hee hee.

I'll probably do homework tomorrow, but maybe i'll bring some crochet to do to ease my mind a little. ^_^

New Project already!

Okay... so i put the poncho on the back burner. I want to finish my first afghan before school starts again.

so i'm making the Autumn Afternoon Afghan from the Lion Brand website.

I've completed my first square... i guess you can say as a guage, because it came out REALLY crappy!!! :P I may frog it and start again, but for now, i've started on my second square.

The tension is much more even this time, so i think i'll start counting squares with this one. Maybe i'll have piccies up by the weekend, but we'll see. It's going to be raining for the rest of the week and i can stay inside and get lots done... um... so long as i don't go off track, hee hee hee.

So i'll update my project counters and i think i have to start that poncho over again, so it's back to 0%!

I didn't want to make a poncho... but it looks so warm and it leaves your arms free of sleeves. So, with the Red Heart comfort prints, i started to make a poncho.

I'm not sure if i want to crochet it all as once piece (like a V and then join the ends) or to make two rectangles and join them together. I'll see.

One rectangle is partially done, probably more than the 15% i am reporting. Pictures will follow when i get home tonight.

(i forget how terribly easy it is to take and post pictures hee hee)

Let's see... after i do the poncho, or maybe at the same time, i will begin my first afghan. I wish yarn wasn't so expensive, but i think i have an idea of an easy pattern that will give me a chance to make all sorts of crazy squares to join together. i may do granny squares, but i think i should work on joining colors before i begin the complicated patterns.

But then my DH always suggests i try the hardest to challenge myself. i love him for knowing my strengths ^_______^

so i'll peruse the pattern web pages to find a challenging pattern with scraps of yarn. hope i have enough!

Yarn Sale

okay... so through the sickness, work and final projects for school, i'm finally able to post what i got at the smiley's yarn sale.

Here is everything i bought:

For my sister, i have the Bernat Breeze - color breezy blue (no dye lot) - Acrylic/Nylon Blend - 3 balls of 5 oz.
I needed the crochet hooks because it's so thick!

Then, for my first Afghan, I'm planning to use these yarns:

Lane cervinia, Sorrento (from italy!) Acrylic- 2-10 ball bags of gray, 1-10 ball bag of dark gray

And just for fun, some Red Heart comfort prints:

I was very pleased with the sale. I only wish i had a little more money to spend because they had good colors. But, alas, i have other responsibilities. So we'll see how the afghan comes out like and then i'll get more yarn after that.

No more yarn until i finish my project!

School ends next week and i'll start my afghan then. In the meantime, i have to get started on my sister's hat. Will add progress bars when i get a chance!

Quick Granny square

Well... another small test done! i used some extra yarn to try a granny square.

The pattern said it was easy, so i gave it a try. here is the site:

you start doing rounds and then one of the rows begins to turn the circle into a square! HAHAHAHA i was so beside myself when i started stitching corners i felt like a silly goose... @_@

So it's a little lopsided, but i went through the whole pattern! YAY!!! hee hee

My flash of course didn't show the actual color, but that's not really important. I think i want to make a bunch of granny squares and then make some ghetto blanket! it will be my own.... my precious.... hee hee hee - alright, i've gone crazy i know.

I did this instead of typing up my report... which is due tomorrow.....>_< hee hee ah well. i'm just excited that i got this done. it was fairly easy (thank you Dayna!).

YAY! Well i finished the crochet part of my tank top. I still have to block it and trim the ends of the yarn.

I'm so excited to have finished this. Just a few notes...
1. Must make the straps a little closer. It's nice for a bra-less ensamble, but with a bra the straps show. :(
2. should figure out a way to make a nice collar and sleves.
3. GET MORE YARN... this was done with two skeins of Utopia yarn by Reynold's. I went back to the store to find no more twist... i mean, no more yarn. ^_^

Now... on to my extra yarn afghan!

Besides that, i finished half of my blue tank. I'm a little worried because i'm running out of yarn faster. The straps are thicker than last time, so i think i'll just connect the one side... or maybe use that as the back. I'll have to play around with how it looks. ^_________^

Tank gift-y!

YAY! Someone from Crochetville wanted my tank top to do something with it! So, i sent it to her. ^_^ Hope she likes it.

A few more rows are done ~reminds herself to raise the bar for her project meter~ and it's looking wonderful. I wonder if i have enough yarn...

New Short-sleeved sweater

okay... so i have that new blue yarn. ^_^

I started 5-6 rows tonight because i was excited about making another shirt... I think i'm going to make a tank again, then finish it off with some short sleeves. We'll see if the yarn holds out.

So far i'm working on the front, and i have 3/4th of the tank strap done. I'm working it the same way i did with the other tank. Vertical SC all the way through so i can add length when it comes to the tank straps. It looks kind of like this

okay... okay.. Rebecca.. thank you for reminding me of the tank top...

the yarn is beautiful and it washes soooooo softly!

I didn't expect the yarn to get softer and much more flexible.

It was Reynold's Utopia.. some cream color! Forgive me, they only mark it with a number. but it's 100% Courtelle Acrylic.. SO SOFT!!!

The problem is that it's way too big. I can fit it around my hips because it stretched. So, i think i'll buy some more and make it into a sweater ^_^.

So here is my dilema. I don't know what to make out of it. It was pretty expensive ($9 for both of them!) so i don't know if i should make a scarf, or start on a poncho.

My previous plan was to make a blanket (it's already getting cold here in NY) but i don't know. This is nice for a border color, but my other colors are varied! Talk about putting boucle with other cotton/acrylic blends... hee hee take a look:

any help would be great. otherwise, i'm going to make up some squares, put them all together (maybe like a mile-a-minute afghan) or just something totally made up.. hee hee

Homework is always looming in the background so when i'm done with my paper (and spending some time with my DH), I'll post photos of the yarn and maybe a drawring of the blanket i plan to make.

It was really funny... I looked at all the bags i had full of yarn and there are SO MANY skeins that were unused, or are left over and not enough to do anything with. If this project goes well, i'll post it on the Crochetville project pages to see if anyone else would like to try.

okay... so the other project turned into a HUGE tank top that was very soft ^.^ lufly!

i'm sick so i'll either be sleeping or crocheting. Who needs to do homework.... <_<

I just bought 2 more skeins of yarn. I'll post the color, photos and brand when i go home. i don't know what to do with it, though. As i told Dani (she commented on my last post - YAY!), I may make socks, or start blocks for my afghan. i have lots of extra yarn that i can't do anything with... maybe i'll just make a patch work afghan! YEAH! Okay!

Now... i just need to get started. time to get back to work ^_^.

Project #5: More bags

Okay.. i bought this beautiful yarn that was varieated - blue, white and brown. It made such a great color combination i wanted to use it for everything. So... i made an eyeglass case (i think i might have written about this before) that turned into an umbrella handle.

Unfortunately, the umbrella was stolen, along with my project... so with the rest of the yarn, i made a bag:

The only thread color i had was pink, so the button matched, but the thread i used to sew it on, didn't. Can you tell? It's a very beautiful yarn combination.. it matches with EVERYTHING i wear (mostly blues and browns.. and there is white in there as well).

It was an easy bag to make... rows across and then just crochet closed the sides. Add a handle and viola!

strange... someone brought very thin yarn to my apartment because they know i crochet. it's on a cone and the colors vary.

right now i'm working with a white color, speckled with black and it's making a nice, light lacey fabric, probably great for a breezy scarf, poncho or shirt. i'll see how it comes out ^_^

Crocheting into winter; Project #3 - part 2

i almost forgot to show my husband's scarfy!

This one was interesting... see below:

you see.. he wrapped it rather tightly around to keep warm and in doing that, it stretched the yarn stiches (is that what you call it?) to make it look elegant...

i found that intriguing and i want to block it that way so it stays. very pretty!

Project #4; Hat and Scarf Sets

Now i had a new love of crochet! I can actually make USEFUL things hee hee. You really don't know how it feels until you've made something. Like when i baked my first loaf of bread. I was hopping around the kitchen looking at the underbrowned loaf.just because i couldn't believe i could make something that you normally buy at the store... but that's another tale, probably for another blog :D

I went on to making hat and scarf sets. My sis was the first to ask for a set. She wanted a hat that was open on the top so she would be able to put her hair through for pigtails. The hat turned into a kitty with ears (i MUST get the pictures!) and a matching LONG and WIDE scarf. (nothing says it like CAPS!!! hee hee).

Then i made one for my dad... my first hat from a pattern. It kinda sucked but he loved it.... what a great dad, huh? I tried to make a round hat from a pattern i got from the library, but i grow VERY impatient and just started doing the rest on my own.

The yarn was very soft, a steely grey color, and it caught on the velcro on his coat and became fuzzy. He loved that because it made the scarf warmer... who knew!? hee hee

So i decided to make a beanie hat for myself and a scarf set from one skein of yarn:

I loved the colors! (got them from a friend for my birthday!) and it's fashionable in my own way ^_^

So hats and scarves are one more thing under my belt.

YAY! On to the next project: Scarves!

I have to say that making scarves boosted my learning experience the most! I made several scarves for family, friends and myself. Here's what i've learned:

1. Scarves are VERY easy to crochet
2. Scarves can be made by an amateur in about 2 hours
3. Fringes are FUN!
4. People LOVE scarves as presents!
5. Crocheting lenthwise is not a good idea... it makes more work if you need to make the scarf longer. Crochet rows as the width so you can adjust the length as much as you need.
6. Bulky yarn makes for REALLY warm scarves
7. Making a long scarf allows you to wrap the scarf around twice and that gives you more warmth

i love making scarves! Here are the pictures of my very first ones! I did the red first, then the yellow:

They are VERY basic... all done in SC (single crochet). I'll have to try with different colors later. I want to crochet those harry potter scarves for my brothers (i haven't taken to knitting just yet... i'm VERY biased to crochet! :P)

Next project... hat and scarf sets ^_^

Sweater-bag, project #2

So my completed coasters and mittens had me ready for some more crocheting. I was ready to make some placemats for a glass table in my apartment. Eying a measurement, the lenth was about as long as my arm when i was a quarter of the way through it. Crocheting lenthwise made it impossible to decrease unless i unravelled it all :(. Instead of getting frustrated... the placemat suddenly became a sweater sleeve!

I'm sure other crocheters and knitters change their minds as they move along. There wasn't a pattern** to follow and the shape was basically rectangle-ish so i figured it could turn into anything.. hee hee
(**I love that people create patterns, i admire them for their patience but i tend to always stray because i want to try something new and unique.)

So off i went to making the sweater sleeve and i remembered i only had one skein of this yarn and that DEFINITELY wouldn't be enough for a sweater... SO... it became a book cover! I folded over the sides and it was perfect to place a hard covered book in. Maybe... lord of the rings or something like that. Then i added a shoulder strap and i couldn't leave home without it as a purse! HAHAHAHA!

I should give a close up to show how raggy it's become.. i drag that thing everywhere! Next time, i think i'll line my bag to help keep it settled. If anything pointy was in there (keys, cell phone anten. pens) they would catch in the yarn, fall through or stick out in weird angles.

Then again.. i could always try a tighter stitch! :P

"First" Crochet Project

Well... it all started with me going back to crochet. I learned when i was in 5th grade... i believe. my Aunt taught me how to use the hook and yarn. The idea was cool at first, and i tried it here and there but it wasn't fun after a while. i never got the hang of keeping a loose hold of the yarn. So basically i had a bunch of knots linked together.

I gave away a blanket.. it was QUITE lopsided! Very surprised that they didn't say anything to me (my family is very critical of everything else... although they tend to be sensitive at times ^_^).

So i gave it up....

Now, YEARS later i find some crochet hooks on eBay and i say to myself... WAIT! I can DO THIS! ^___________^. I bought some Susan Bates hooks (ranging from a 10.5 -K to a tiny 10 for doilies... tiny!) for about $8. Next step... went to michael's for some yarn on sale! YAY!

My REAL first project was going to be gloves, but they really didn't keep me warm. they turned into mittens but since they weren't any good...(practice more than anything) i threw them out. So then i moved onto coasters:
